High-tech expertise
Turku region is one of the most important shipbuilding centres in the world, and is home to a significant well of shipbuilding industry knowledge. Because of the local high-tech expertise and the region’s huge maritime sector, comprising all operations from seafaring and maritime industries to port operations, the world’s largest cruise ships are build in Turku by STX Europe, supported by hundreds of local subcontractors.

Turnover of 4 billion euro
The maritime sector includes some 400 companies operating from approximately 500 offices in the area. The turnover of the companies is about 4 billion euros, of which about 2.4 billion directly relates to maritime sector businesses. This industry provides work for more than 17,000 people in Turku region, of which 11,000 are directly employed by the maritime sector.

One significant strength of Turku region’s maritime business is its long history in all core fields. Over the course of time, a wide and comprehensive network of subcontractors and suppliers has been created, as has large-scale and high-standard expertise. The advantages offered by this long tradition are further strengthened by the region’s location and its excellent connections to the entire Baltic Sea area.
